      <image:caption>Acrylic on DryVit / Stucco, 73’ x 31’ Urban Harvest StL is a non-profit that sets up and manages community gardens to benefit people who live in what are known as ‘food deserts’: easy to buy chips, hard to find fresh vegetables. Their signature garden is on the roof of this building, thus FOOD ROOF. However the obscure location coupled with an anonymous looking building made it almost impossible for people to find them. The directors had seen the mural we painted for St Louis Style House (also in this decade) and felt that we could create a unique mural that would give them the exposure they needed, and provide visual nourishment for the surrounding community. It has already become a landmark. (See Video in Media and Press)</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The mural was designed so that volunteers, under Robert Fishbone’s direction, could help with significant prep work, as well as base out the different color areas. Liza Fishbone then joined her father to add all of the shading and more complex elements to the mural. These volunteers are from Wells Fargo, which also contributed to the cost of the project.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>We always work from a full color design, which invariably goes through changes as we translate a small printed picture into a huge, painted mural seen in changing lighting. It is important that the public gets to see the process, including all the tools we use…they see that not only is there magic, there is a LOT of hard work!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>No, were not fishing! We added ‘pollen bubbles’ as an additional design element to create a sense of movement and whimsy. To properly place them we dangled samples in various spots until the person on the ground yelled, “Hold it right there!”, and took a picture. We then painted them on the wall, with shadows.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The Vines have been amazing cheerleaders for St. Louis neighborhoods. We also noted that they are fascinated with all things 1970’s. So we developed a vibrant design that incorporated St. Louis architectural elements, and behind them have expanding ‘doughnuts’ in a 70’s color palette, framing a giant disco ball…of course! It has become a very popular spot for selfies. (See Video in Media and Press)</image:caption>

      <image:title>2010s - 66 Reasons too Love St. Louis, 2015, St. Louis</image:title>
      <image:caption>This mural is a gift to the city from Phillips 66 and is located on the western-facing wall of KDHX at 3524 Washington Ave in the Grand Center Arts District.. After 20 artists auditioned, we were selected to design and paint the mural. In fact this project is what got Liza and I working together, and officially launched us as Team Fishbone. The list of the 66 Reasons to Love St. Louis contains many places unfamiliar to most St. Louisians and will take you all over the city and county. As the mural has to do with exploration, we chose to have an actual, 18th century French Voyageur padding through the waters that identify this part of the country. His canoe is churning up the river in front of him, and unveiling the future, which is our present. (See Video in Media and Press)</image:caption>

      <image:caption>A wall in need of help at Jefferson and Cherokee in the midst of the Cherokee District. I applied for and received an Artist Support Grant from the Regional Arts Commission to facilitate a workshop, “The Art and Business of Mural Making”. Not only did we design and paint a large, complicated mural as part of the class, we also had lawyers and accountants explain what it really entails to be in business. And though they may not think this way, ALL artists are in business. There were 7 artists in the workshop.</image:caption>

We however suggested she let us design for the entire elevator shaft, on both floors. We saw it as a single, 3-D surface…she loved the idea. Their goal was to have something inspiring and beautiful, that would help to relax clients as they entered the building…the finished piece has been embraced by clients and employees alike.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Lindy Squared - Lindy Squared, 1977 / 1985 / 2023, St. Louis</image:title>
      <image:caption>Acrylic on brick and cement, 72 shades of gray in 1200 squares, 30’ x 40’ Realizing that murals can be seen from a variety of distances and locations, we began to explore ways of rendering and image that would appear to change over distance. Working with engineers who were looking at early versions of the Bell Picturephone , we collaborated with Ed Manning who provided us with a spatially quantized image of one of the most iconic pictures of Charles Lindberg. This was all precomputer. Taking two years to realize and paint, it quickly became a much visited, and well loved landmark in the downtown cityscape. Then in 1981 the mural came dow to much protest, the result of urban transformation. In 1985 I was commissioned to recreate it for St. Louis Center, to look like it had been cut out of the building and saved, though at a reduced size. Then in 2012, again due to redesign, I cut it out of the wall and put in storage. In 2013 it was acquired by the Missouri History Society / Museum, to be installed in a different form as a focus of a new permanent gallery to open in 20203 /2024. The never-ending mural!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>With computers still on the horizon, we used a photo densitometer to measure the light reflectance of all 1200 squares. This resulted in 144 distinct values which we knew was way excessive; we reduced it to half that many. We’d still need 72 different shades of gray paint. One of the sponsors, Spatz Vane-Calvert Paint company made the paints for us.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Using very long straight edges, rulers, tape measures, levels and plumb / chalk lines, we laid out the 1200 squares. Since this was the basis of the mural, it needed to be done perfectly.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Once the squares were laid out they needed to be correctly numbered for each of the 72 shades. After we painted a small canvas to make sure it all looked correct, we saw that it didn't ! It seemed too light in places. So we skewed the values towards the dark end of our spectrum, and it looked just right.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This shows about half of our shades of gray, with the numbers changed once we adjusted them towards the dark side. It was almost impossible to see the difference between any two adjacent shades. Numbering was the only way we could be assured that they would go in the correct square.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Acrylic on plaster and rigid board foam, 13’ x 17’, 1200 squares in 72 shades of gray paint There was a picture to the right of the piece showing the original Lindy Squared in its downtown setting. <image:caption>Acrylic on plaster and rigid board foam, 13’ x 17’, 1200 squares in 72 shades of gray paint. In 2012, after being on display for 27 years, St. Louis Center was being remodeled and Lindy Squared was not part of the plan. We then asked, and they gave us permission to literally cut it out of the wall so we could put it in storage for who knows what! They also gave back any rights that they may have had in the piece, so we could do whatever we wanted with it. Because of how well the sculpted wall had been affixed to the drywall underneath, we had to cut through everything, metal studs and all.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Acrylic on plaster and rigid board foam, 13’ x 17’, 1200 squares in 72 shades of gray paint With the help of my son Tyler and two construction workers, we were able to safely cut out and remove Lindy Squared II, in four horizontal pieces. A few days later with the help of several really strong guys, we moved them through a tunnel, then wheeled them down three levels of a parking garage to our truck. We then placed them in our own storage locker.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>In 2013, the Missouri History Museum (now the Missouri History Society) was interested in acquiring the piece for some as yet unknown exhibit. As they already maintained our extensive mural files in their archives (7,000 color slides, original designs, letters, contracts, press clippings) they felt it made sense to also store this significant artwork, even in pieces. Here you see MHS curators unloading it into their warehouse.</image:caption>

This picture shows the six curators from the MHS who I am working with discussing options. We actually came up with a concept that departs from merely putting the piece back together. The new design will combine the ‘eye’ section with a large digital display, a diorama of downtown St. Louis, cabinets with relics, and photo/video displays. In addition they want to develop an App and an augmented reality (AR) complement. The gallery is set to open in 2023/2024. Stay tuned for the never-ending-mural!</image:caption>

It was very challenging as we also had to texturize the canvas before applying the paint, which of course made painting harder. All that said, they turned out great, both the artist and client were thrilled…us too.</image:caption>

Though the buildings are used for manufacturing and storage, and offices, the owner takes great pride in his properties, and is a great corporate neighbor. As such, he commissioned us in 1996 to paint his Luna Moth logo on the building on the left in the picture. The design we presented him with was way beyond what he imagined and inspired him to continue commissioning works for six other outdoor walls, as well as two interior walls. They all have themes of tropical flora and fauna. He further embellished the properties with beautiful plantings and stone sculptures from Asia. He does this all because he wants his place to look nice! In 2017 the owner rehired us to restore all of the murals due to water damage and fading. We will finish in 2020.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>One Shot Bulletin Sign Painters Paint (never ever use oil paints for a mural!!!) 18’ x 30’ In our third year as mural painters, we received a grant from the NEA to do several murals along well traveled roads throughout St. Louis City. The St. Louis Beautification Commission, which we found out were already fans of our work, doubled the project, which mostly meant we would actually get paid for the five murals completed. This mural shows the serenity that can come with aging, and pictures a man sitting on a cutaway hillside. The revealed layers, going from realistic to whimsical, are a metaphor for the depths that can be reached through meditation. On the other hand, some folks said we needed to put a fishing rod in his hands. Different practice, similar goals.</image:caption>

Since our designs are always site specific, we often look for a solution in these problems, let them speak to us. The utility poles were the most prominent blocking feature of this site, and since there is a beautiful Victorian Park nearby they became…</image:caption>

      <image:title>1970s - Get the Lead Out!, 1977, t. Louis</image:title>
      <image:caption>Acrylic on brick, 24’ x 24’ The lead paint that was often used to paint walls and woodwork in older buildings is toxic, especially for young children, It’s sweet taste doesn't help. When a building is torn down, it often reveals the painted, interior walls from the connecting building. In this case, it has exposed a child holding a paint chip while a parent, a landlord, a nurse, a judge and a painter are swooping up the stairs to try and stop the child from eating the paint chip. They are the five groups that need to work together to solve this really scary problem. The mural was completed on the Yeatman Community Health Clinic in north St. Louis, that provides lead paint testing of children. The mural makes it really easy to find the clinic.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>In 1974, after just arriving in St. Louis, there was a huge snow storm. I took a picture of two very large, snow covered trees in the park across from our home, somehow knowing it would be used for some piece of art, someday. When doing a mural there are two main factors, the content or theme, and the style. It is the latter that really makes for a unique art piece. Here we see those same two trees repeated, or echoed, three times, with color changes in each layer. It seems to change when seen in different seasons. Completed as part of an NEA grant.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Directly across the street from this mural site is the very historic, Soulard Farmers Market. Like most urban areas, the ethnic makeup has shifted over the decades, and in this case, two centuries. At the time we designed this mural, the original predominance of Germans and other Central Europeans had come to include African-Americans and Asians; Hispanics arrived after. We chose to depict the past and the present makeup of the area and added some more surreal design elements to this brick wall: animated, painted brick;, 3-D planes with rainbow edges; and neon stars around the metal stars.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1970s - Face of a Nation, 1977, St. Louis</image:title>
      <image:caption>As part of our NEA grant we asked the Mid American Indian Cultural Center if they would like murals on their building to help identify the location. We designed for both the front and side. The larger, side facing mural features Wolf Robe, a well known Cheyenne chief. It also depicts the change in living faced by many Native Americans, from open spaces to urban areas. The shading in the clouds shows scenes from daily life, including the Trail of Tears, one of the many forced relocations endured by Native Americans.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Acrylic on stucco, Whole building We were brought to Baton Rouge to consult on their soon to be launched mural program. We gave presentations and discussed options. While there, they commissioned us on the spot to design and paint a mural on this building. We chose to do a metamorphosis, a popular theme for us. River reflections rise up from the water into a rainbow washed sky to transform into brown pelicans, the state bird, and fly away. Only later did we find out that this building used to be the Grand Old Pelican Furniture Store.</image:caption>

Working with the Union Sarah Economic Development Corporation, they wanted a landmark that would speak to both the day and night life of this centrally located part of St. Louis, as well as its integrated makeup. Because of the massive size we picked large, recognizable elements for the upper portions, and then included 10’ to 15’ tall portraits of actual people who either lived or worked in the area.</image:caption>

We begin at ground level with baseball, then evolve to basketball, then football. Called ‘Moments” because it shows those moments when the Pro’s know just what to do. We combined Rawlings products with painted imagery, and for a while had a sound installation for an immersive experience.</image:caption>

To create the illusion of less gravity, we have all kinds of sporting equipment floating up into the sky, out of a fantasy football locker room. Working with the St. Louis Arts and Humanities Commission, we developed a plan to paint the 800’ long construction fence around the Old Post Office in downtown St. Louis, in one day. This meant planning, planning, planning. Forty artists were each given twenty linear feet to paint. Besides refraining from anything inflammatory, the artists could paint whatever they wanted. The only requirement was that it blended into the section to the right. All of the artists were paid a stipend, all materials and food/beverages were provided, and students from Crossroads Middle School acted as gofers. It was an amazing and fun day!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Jeff and Randy Vines, two of St. Louis’s most fervent cheerleaders, were very familiar with our work and one day hoped to collaborate on a signature mural for their building on the western edge of the Cherokee District in South St. Louis city. We decided that a very strong visual statement, using a color palette from the 1970’s (their favorite decade), combined with architectural elements from three important St. Louis buildings, would not only define this area of town, but would provide an upbeat feel to what had otherwise been a bland corner. It is now one of the most popular spots for selfies, right under the giant disco ball.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This rare, black and white video from 1974, shot on some of the first portable video equipment ever made available, is a telling document of people’s reactions to our first mural, Wally the wall. Most upbeat, they also show people wondering , “Why would you such a thing?” The positive and life changing experience of this first mural inspired us to become life-long, public artists. The interviews are begun by Sarah Linquist, with Eric Von Schrader on the camera..</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Acrylic on brick and cement, 72 shades of gray in 1200 squares, 30’ x 40’ In 1977, after two years of desgning and fund raising and convincing, we painted Lindy Squared on the old Lion Gas Building in downtown St. Louis. It quickly became a much visited and much loved landmark. In 1981, after much protest and even contests in the Riverfront Times newspaper for ways to save it, the building was demolished to make way for a new corporate headquarters. This video shows the demolition party with some added time-lapse footage of it being painted, and later days of wrecking. See Lindy Squared under Special Projects for more details pictures and captions.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Yellow Bricks and Marble stones, 40’ in diameter This picture shows site preparation. On the outside grounds of Central Reform Congregation we have a ‘Fitness Course for the Soul’. Each stop along the way is to help create a space to get in touch with different qualities of what makes us spiritual beings living in the world. After two years of planning, I led 30 members of the congregation in building our labyrinth, modeled after the biblical, walled city of Jericho (see following pictures). To keep the entire process sacred, we spent 90 minutes building it in silence: lifting, carrying, passing and placing each of the 800 bricks and stones. Afterwards it was infilled with topsoil and reseeded. It is light and inviting.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The Jericho Labyrinth from the Farhi Bible from 1366-1383. It shows the walled City of Jericho. While there are many different designs used for labyrinths, and many thousands are found around the world, we used this one as our inspiration.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - On The Wall Productions is a family owned mural company.</image:title>

      <image:title>About - Our history…</image:title>
      <image:caption>Since forming ON THE WALL PRODUCTIONS, INC. in 1974, mural artists Robert Fishbone and Sarah Linquist (1951-2010) made it their ongoing mission to transform anonymous walls into inspiring, meaningful and memorable artworks.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/585dad96ebbd1af27cd0129e/1567612650580-TCYUQW7BV9YNDBP154FP/IMG_2174.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>About - A new era…</image:title>
      <image:caption>In 2015, Fishbone teamed up with his daughter Liza Fishbone (and occasionally her brother, Tyler) to usher in a new chapter of mural making. The amicable friction generated by the difference in their styles unleashed a dynamic from which provoking artworks emerge.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/585dad96ebbd1af27cd0129e/1568335708728-LK1GQJN5C8T8Z8FISZFI/IMG_3509.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>About - Our Approach</image:title>
      <image:caption>We create site specific murals that are colorful and captivating. Murals have power. Context matters. We believe that it is our responsibility as public artists to harness that power to design and paint murals that are relevant. Murals that are relevant to a community. It is important to us that the community feels like they can take ownership of the artwork after we leave.</image:caption>
